DRIVING SUSTAINABILITY WITH CARBON-NEUTRAL TYRES- A UN Ecosystem Restoration Programme

The innovative design is made from algae and post-consumer waste.

ReTyre, a Norwegian tyre company, has made a significant leap in sustainable tyre production by unveiling the world’s first carbon-neutral tyre.

reTyre collaborates with suppliers globally to source materials responsibly. Algae are harvested from lakes and oceans worldwide, supported by the UN Ecosystem Restoration Programme.

Here are the key highlights:

  1. Materials: The tyre is crafted from 100% reclaimed materials, including recycled fishing nets and bloomed algae. These innovative materials help reduce the tyre’s global warming potential by up to 82% compared to conventional tyres.
  2. Algae Blooms: ReTyre harvests algae blooms for the tyre tread, which not only prevents harmful emissions but also helps restore aquatic ecosystemsin oceans and lakes.
  3. Circular Economy: Unlike traditional rubber tyres, ReTyre’s design embraces a circular economy. Worn tyres can be repurposed into new ones, reducing waste and promoting sustainability.
  4. Bio-Based Elastomers: The tyre incorporates versatile bio-based elastomers, which can be easily repurposed for use in various other industries.
  5. Urban Cyclists: ReTyre also showcased low-carbon, bio-based tyre designs for urban cyclistsat Eurobike 2024.

In addition to bicycles, ReTyre develops tyres for prams, bike trailers, and is working on wheels for cars and motorbikes.

The carbon-neutral tyre by reTyre incorporates several unique materials, each chosen for its ability to minimise environmental impact

Conventional rubber tyres fall short on sustainability, largely due to their inability to be remoulded into new tyres, with most recycling efforts involving the tyre being burnt to produce energy in a process that releases toxic pollutants.

By contrast, ReTyre has designed its tyres to embrace a circular economy, so that worn tyres can be repurposed into new ones. Adding to this eco-friendly loop, the versatile bio-based elastomers in ReTyre’s tyres can be easily repurposed for use in various other industries.
