AUSTRALIA NEW INNOVATION VISA – 6 December, 2024

This Innovation visa program is part of Australia’s broader effort to modernize its migration system and to address workforce shortages and boost economic resilience.

Australia has rolled out a new initiative called the National Innovation Visa (subclass 858) (NIV), designed to attract top-tier talent with internationally recognized achievements in key areas such as advanced robotics, clean energy, and quantum computing.

This includes:

  • global researchers

  • entrepreneurs

  • innovative investors

  • athletes and creatives who can make significant contributions that will benefit Australia’s future prosperity.

The National Innovation Visa  is a permanent visa designed for highly skilled migrants who can significantly contribute to Australia’s future prosperity. Replacing the Global Talent visa on December 6, 2024, the NIV targets individuals with internationally recognized achievements in fields such as professions, sports, the arts, and academia and research.

As part of Australia’s strategy to attract top talent and drive growth in key economic sectors, the NIV has no age limit. However, applicants under 18 or over 55 must demonstrate that their work will provide exceptional benefits to Australia. A minimum functional English requirement also applies.

To apply, candidates must be nominated by an approved individual or organization using Form 1000. The nominator must endorse the applicant’s qualifications and suitability for the visa.

The NIV has streamlined the application process previously used for the Global Talent visa. Applications submitted before December 6, 2024, will be assessed according to the regulations in effect at the time of submission.

Key Features:

  • Invitation-Only: Candidates need an invitation from the Immigration Minister to apply.
  • Focus on Critical Sectors: Prioritizes experts in sectors like renewables, low-emission technologies, and health industries.
  • Expression of Interest (EOI): Applicants submit an EOI, with invitations extended to those aligning with priority fields and achievements.
  • Permanent Residency: Successful applicants receive permanent residency, enabling them to work, study, access public healthcare, and sponsor family members.

The NIV has streamlined the application process previously used for the Global Talent visa. Applications submitted before December 6, 2024, will be assessed according to the regulations in effect at the time of submission.
