Australia is actively fostering Indigenous leadership in the clean energy sector through several key initiatives and organizations that bridge Indigenous communities, industry, and science.

First Nations Clean Energy Network (FNCEN)

The First Nations Clean Energy Network is a national coalition comprising First Nations people, land councils, community organizations, unions, legal experts, and renewable energy companies. Its mission is to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are central to Australia’s clean energy transition. FNCEN

  • Community-led renewable projects that promote energy sovereignty.
  • Skills training and employment pathways in the renewable energy sector.​
  • Policy advocacy to embed Indigenous rights and participation in energy development.​
  • Best Practice Principles for clean energy projects, emphasizing free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC), benefit-sharing, and cultural respect. ​

First Nations Clean Energy Strategy (2024–2030)

INDIGENOUS ENERGY AUSTRALIA

Indigenous Energy Australia, represented by CEO Michael Frangos, is part of the Better Futures Australia initiative. It aims to integrate Indigenous perspectives into Australia’s climate action efforts, promoting sustainable energy solutions that benefit Indigenous communities. ​Better Futures

🏫 Centre for Appropriate Technology (CfAT)

Based in Alice Springs, CfAT is an Indigenous-controlled not-for-profit organization established in 1980. It focuses on improving the lives of Indigenous Australians through appropriate technology, including renewable energy solutions. CfAT operated the Bushlight program, installing over 130 renewable energy systems in remote areas across the Northern Territory, Western Australia, and Queensland. ​CfAT

🌱 Seed Mob

Seed Mob is Australia’s first Indigenous youth-led climate network. Established in 2014, it empowers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people to lead climate justice campaigns, focusing on protecting land and water from fossil fuel extraction and promoting renewable energy solutions. ​SEED MOB
